Golden Teacher vs Penis Envy: Which Strain Is Your Vibe?
If you've spent five minutes on any shroom shelf, you've met these two. Golden Teacher is the friendly classic, the strain a lot of people start with and keep coming back to. Penis Envy is the one with the reputation, the strain experienced folks talk about with a raised eyebrow. Both are varieties of the same species, Psilocybe cubensis, but they look different, grow differently and have very different reputations. Here's the full lowdown.
First, a word on strains
All the strains on our dried mushrooms shelf are cultivated varieties of Psilocybe cubensis. Calling them "strains" is a bit like talking about apple varieties: same species, different looks, growth habits and, people say, character. The main active compounds are the same in all of them: psilocybin, which your body converts into psilocin. What can differ is how much of those compounds a given batch contains.
That's the most important thing to understand about strain comparisons. Potency varies from batch to batch and even mushroom to mushroom, depending on genetics, growing conditions, how the mushrooms were harvested and how they were dried. So treat strain reputations as useful guides, not guarantees. For a deeper dive into whether strains truly feel different, read Do Strains Really Feel Different?
Golden Teacher: the friendly classic
Golden Teachers are tall and elegant, with long, slender stems and broad caps that turn a warm golden brown, often with little lighter flecks on top. The strain is commonly said to have appeared in cultivation in the 1980s, and the name reflects both those golden caps and the idea that the mushroom has something to teach.
Golden Teacher is one of the most widely grown strains in the world. It's known for being forgiving and reliable to cultivate, which partly explains why it's everywhere. People tend to describe the experience as balanced, clear and insightful, with a mix of visuals, warmth and reflection rather than an overwhelming rush. That reputation is why it's such a common first choice.

Penis Envy: the one with the reputation
Penis Envy mushrooms are thick, dense and stubby, with small caps that often barely open. You can probably see where the name comes from. A widely repeated origin story links the strain to spores collected in the Amazon in the early 1970s and later developed by growers in the United States, but like many strain histories, it's hard to verify.
What isn't in doubt is the reputation. Penis Envy is widely considered one of the stronger cubensis strains, and many people report that a given weight feels more intense than the same weight of a classic strain like Golden Teacher. Users often describe it as deeper, more immersive and more body-heavy. It's also harder to grow, producing fewer spores and slower yields, which is part of its mystique.
Penis Envy has spawned a whole family of related varieties, including Albino Penis Envy, PE6, Golden Penis Envy and Uncut Penis Envy. Our Penis Envy family guide explains the differences.
Side by side
- Look: Golden Teacher is tall with golden, open caps. Penis Envy is thick, dense and stubby with small, often closed caps.
- Reputation: Golden Teacher is seen as balanced and approachable. Penis Envy is seen as strong and intense.
- Typical fans: Golden Teacher suits beginners and people who want a familiar, steady experience. Penis Envy suits experienced people who know how they respond.
- Dosing approach: With Golden Teacher, standard dose ranges are a reasonable guide. With Penis Envy, many people start lower than usual.
How dosing differs
For a typical cubensis strain like Golden Teacher, approximate ranges for dried mushrooms look like this:
- Microdose: about 0.05 to 0.25 g
- Low: about 0.5 to 1 g
- Moderate: about 1 to 2.5 g
- Strong: about 2.5 to 3.5 g
With Penis Envy and its relatives, many experienced users reduce those amounts, often starting at roughly two-thirds or less of what they'd take with a classic strain, until they know how a particular bag affects them. That's a cautious habit, not a precise conversion. The safest approach with any new bag is the same: start low, wait at least two hours before even thinking about more, and save any increase for another day.
What each experience tends to feel like
At a moderate dose, people commonly describe Golden Teacher as a gradual come-up with brightening colours, gentle visual patterns on surfaces, waves of laughter or emotion, and a reflective, "teaching" quality that gives the strain its name. Many say it leaves room to think and talk.
Penis Envy at a comparable felt intensity is often described as heavier and more inward: a stronger body load, deeper closed-eye visuals and a greater sense of being swept along. Some people love that depth; others find it too much.
These are tendencies people report, not guarantees, and your mindset and setting shape the experience at least as much as the strain does.
What's normal with either strain
Both strains can bring the usual effects of psilocybin:
- Yawning, chills or mild nausea during the come-up, often in the first hour.
- Visual changes, like breathing walls, shimmering colours and patterns behind closed eyes.
- Time distortion, where minutes feel like hours.
- Emotional waves, from giggles to tears.
- A heavy or buzzy body feeling, often stronger with Penis Envy.
Not normal, and a reason to call 911: chest pain, trouble breathing, seizures, fainting, or anyone at risk of hurting themselves or others.
Strain myths worth dropping
- "Penis Envy is always twice as strong." Some batches feel much stronger, others less so. There is no fixed multiplier.
- "Golden Teacher is weak." It has a reputation for being balanced, not weak. A strong dose of Golden Teacher is still a strong dose.
- "Bigger mushrooms are stronger." Size tells you little. Potency depends on genetics, growing conditions, harvest timing and drying.
- "The strain decides the trip." Your mindset, setting, dose and the people around you shape the experience at least as much.
Choosing by setting
A practical way to think about it: Golden Teacher at a low dose is a popular pick for a gentle afternoon in nature with a sitter, a cozy evening with close friends, or a first experience. Penis Envy is more often chosen for a quiet, inward session at home, lying down with eyeshades and music. If you're planning to be social or outdoors, the more approachable strain usually makes life easier.
So which one is for you?
If you're new, want something easygoing, or are planning a first full experience, Golden Teacher is the usual starting point. If you've got some experience, know your limits and want something deeper, Penis Envy and its cousins are popular. Many people keep both around: Golden Teacher for lighter, social or outdoor days, Penis Envy for rare, deeper sessions.

Don't forget the basics
A strain name is only part of the story. Your mood, your surroundings and who you're with shape the experience just as much. Read our set and setting guide and Trip Sitting 101 before any full experience.
Skip psilocybin if you have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, are pregnant, or take lithium, MAOIs, tramadol or antidepressants without medical advice. You must be 19 or older to shop with us, and never drive after taking mushrooms. Psilocybin is a controlled substance in Canada.
