Do Magic Mushroom Strains Really Feel Different?

Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, Enigma, Hero, Albino A+. Strain names make shopping fun, and online forums are full of confident descriptions: this one is "visual," that one is "body-heavy," another is "spiritual." But do strains really feel different, or are we tasting the label? Here is an honest look.

Almost all the same species

Nearly every strain sold in Canada is a variety of one species, Psilocybe cubensis. Strains are cultivated lines selected by growers over decades for traits like size, colour, growth speed and yield. Think of them like apple varieties: Honeycrisp and McIntosh look and taste different, but they are both apples.

The main active compounds are the same across strains: psilocybin, which the body converts to psilocin, plus small amounts of related compounds such as baeocystin and norbaeocystin. Some researchers have wondered whether different ratios of these minor compounds could shape the experience, but there is not yet good evidence that they do in a way people can reliably feel.

What the research actually says

Strain research is surprisingly thin. A 2025 review in the Journal of Fungi noted that while practitioners recognize dozens of strains, formal study is lacking, and that "there is very limited knowledge regarding cultivation techniques and environmental influences on psilocybin production."

A 2026 study by some of the same researchers grew 14 strains under identical conditions and measured them. Psilocybin content varied more than sevenfold between strains. Just as importantly, it also varied considerably between individual mushrooms of the same strain. The authors concluded that "both inter- and intra-strain biochemical heterogeneity persist even under controlled conditions."

So yes, some strains may tend to be stronger. But a single bag can still surprise you, and there are no reliable lab numbers that let anyone promise a strain's potency. We do not publish potency claims for that reason.

Potency is probably most of it

If one strain tends to be twice as strong, a "normal" amount of it simply feels like a bigger dose: brighter visuals, more body load, deeper emotion, more time distortion. That alone can explain a lot of strain reputations. The Penis Envy family's heavyweight reputation, for example, is consistent with it often being more potent, not necessarily with it being a different kind of experience.

Expectation and setting do the rest

Expectations are powerful. If you have read that Golden Teacher is "insightful," you are primed to look for insight. Research on microdosing found people taking placebos reported similar benefits to those taking real microdoses, which shows how much belief shapes experience. Add the room, the music, your mood and who you are with, and you have plenty of reasons two trips feel different even with the same strain.

So are strain differences made up?

Not necessarily. Lots of experienced people insist they notice consistent differences, and their observations are not worthless. The honest answer is that strain differences are largely anecdotal, the science is young, and potency differences explain much of what people describe. If you enjoy comparing strains, go for it. Just do not let a label override your caution.

How to shop smart

  • Pick a strain that suits your experience level. Golden Teacher is a classic first strain. Penis Envy, Albino Penis Envy and Enigma have strong reputations, so start much smaller with them.
  • Treat every bag as new. Even with a favourite strain, take a smaller test amount from a new batch.
  • Compare fairly. If you want to test strain differences, keep everything else the same: same dose, same setting, similar mood, and at least a week or two apart.
  • Keep notes. A simple log of strain, weight, onset, peak and feelings beats memory every time.
  • Try a sampler. The Six Strain Tasting Flight is built for side-by-side comparisons on separate days.

Start-low ranges

As a reminder, these are rough ranges for dried cubensis, and potent strains can feel a level higher: microdose about 0.05 to 0.25 g, low about 0.5 to 1 g, moderate about 1 to 2.5 g, strong about 2.5 to 3.5 g. Our dose size guide explains what each feels like.

Mushrooms are for adults 19 and over, psilocybin is a controlled substance in Canada, and it can interact with medications like lithium and some antidepressants. Read our safety guide before you start.
