The Penis Envy Family: PE, APE, PE6, Uncut and More

Yes, the name gets a giggle. But the Penis Envy family is one of the most respected lineages in the mushroom world, known for dense, chunky fruits and a reputation for strength. Here is who is who, and how to approach them.

What makes PE different

Penis Envy strains are varieties of Psilocybe cubensis with a distinctive shape: thick, heavy stems and small caps that often barely open. Classic PE produces few spores, which makes it harder to grow and helped give it a cult following among cultivators.

The family's reputation for potency is consistent across many anecdotal reports. But research has also shown large variation within strains, so a PE bag is not guaranteed to be stronger than another strain, and it is not guaranteed to be consistent from batch to batch. Treat it as strong and every new bag as new.

Penis Envy (PE)

The original. Penis Envy has dense stems, compact caps and a well-earned reputation. Great for experienced travellers who want depth. Newcomers should start with something gentler.

Albino Penis Envy (APE)

The same chunky shape with almost no pigment, giving it a ghostly white look. APE is often described as one of the strongest varieties around. Blue bruising on the pale stems is normal.

PE6

A cross with fuller caps and a slightly friendlier reputation. PE6 is a common middle ground: more oomph than Golden Teacher, a touch more approachable than full-strength PE.

PE7

Another member of the family with the classic dense build. Penis Envy 7 is a natural next stop if you already know PE.

Uncut Penis Envy

Left to grow out longer before harvest, so the fruits are bigger and chunkier, with caps that may open more. See Uncut Penis Envy.

Golden Penis Envy and Melmac

Golden PE brings caramel-coloured caps on thick stems, while Melmac, also known as Homestead PE, is a beefy variety with a devoted following.

Do they feel different from each other?

People love comparing PE variants like vinyl pressings, and some report differences in visuals or body feel. The honest answer is that differences between PE family members are anecdotal, and potency variation probably explains most of what people notice. Our post on whether strains really feel different goes deeper.

Dosing the PE family

Use the standard ranges for dried cubensis as a ceiling, not a target:

  • Microdose: about 0.05 to 0.25 g, staying at the low end with PE
  • Low: about 0.5 to 1 g
  • Moderate: about 1 to 2.5 g
  • Strong: about 2.5 to 3.5 g

A practical approach: with any PE variety you have not tried, take about half to two-thirds of what you would take of a classic strain, and see how it lands. Weigh it, since the dense stems are heavier than they look. Wait at least two hours before considering more.

At moderate to strong doses, expect intense visuals, big emotional waves, time distortion and a strong body load. Plan a free day, a calm place and a sober trip sitter.

Want PE without a scale?

Some products are made with PE strains, like the Albino Penis Envy heart gummies. Read the label carefully and start with one piece.

The whole PE family is for adults 19 and over with some experience. Psilocybin is a controlled substance in Canada and can interact with lithium, MAOIs, tramadol and some antidepressants. Never drive after taking it. Read our safety guide and dose size guide.
