How Long Do Magic Mushrooms Last?

By Shroomshack

Most people feel the first effects 20 to 60 minutes after eating dried mushrooms, notice them build to a peak somewhere between one and three hours in, and are mostly back to normal after four to six hours. A larger amount tends to last a little longer and feel a lot stronger. This guide shows where those numbers come from, what researchers actually measured, and why the grams on a package are only a rough guide to how strong a dose will be.

What the studies measured

Nearly all human research on timing uses pure psilocybin, measured in milligrams, given to healthy volunteers in a lab. It does not use dried mushrooms measured in grams. That difference matters later in this guide, but the timeline carries over.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study led by Felix Hasler in Zurich, eight volunteers received placebo and four different doses of psilocybin. Effects increased with dose. The volunteers typically noticed the first changes 20 to 40 minutes after taking it, effects peaked at about 60 to 90 minutes, and they had mostly returned to baseline by about six hours.

A pooled analysis of three studies by Friederike Holze and colleagues at the University of Basel looked at 79 healthy volunteers who took 15, 25 or 30 mg of psilocybin. Levels of psilocin, the compound the body makes from psilocybin and the one that actually acts on the brain, peaked after about two hours on average. The subjective effects lasted 5.6 hours on average at 15 mg, 5.5 hours at 25 mg and 6.4 hours at 30 mg. The spread between people was wide, with typical variation of roughly one and a half to two hours either side of those averages.

A 2025 systematic review of psilocybin pharmacokinetics (Meshkat and colleagues) puts the half-life of psilocin in the body at roughly two to three hours, depending on the study.

Does a bigger dose last longer?

A little, but the bigger change is in intensity. In the Basel data, 15 mg and 25 mg lasted about the same time on average, and 30 mg lasted about an hour longer. The researchers describe both the duration and the intensity of effects as dose-dependent. In Roland Griffiths' 2011 dose-effect study at Johns Hopkins, volunteers received doses from 5 to 30 mg per 70 kg of body weight in sessions of up to eight hours, and the experiences grew steadily more intense with dose, with the strongest mystical-type experiences at 20 and 30 mg.

From milligrams to grams

A lab dose is a measured amount of one pure compound. A dried mushroom is a natural product, and how much it contains varies far more than most people expect. When researchers grew 14 strains of Psilocybe cubensis under identical, controlled conditions and measured them (Sharchaton and colleagues, 2026), total tryptamines, mostly psilocybin, ranged from 2.6 to 20.7 mg per gram between strains. That is nearly an eightfold difference. Even within one strain, psilocybin varied by roughly 13 to 23 percent from one mushroom to the next.

In plain terms, one gram of one mushroom can hold a small fraction of what one gram of another holds, and two mushrooms from the same bag are not identical. This is why experienced people weigh their dose, start low and treat any gram figure as a starting point rather than a promise.

What about named strains?

Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, Albino Penis Envy, Enigma and the other names you see in shops are well known to growers and users, but they are not well documented in the scientific literature. A 2025 review of Psilocybe cubensis strains by Kurzbaum and colleagues found published chemical measurements for very few named strains (B+ is the one it lists with lab figures) and described most popular strains from grower and community reports. It calls for formal strain-level testing.

So when you read that one strain is twice as strong as another, or that it lasts longer or feels more introspective, treat that as experience shared by growers and users, not as measured fact. It is still a sensible reason to be more careful with strains known for their strength: take less than you would of a milder one.

Practical timing

  • Plan for at least six hours, and keep the rest of the day free. Don't drive until the next day.
  • Wait at least two hours before taking more. Effects keep building for one to three hours, and blood levels of psilocin peak around the two-hour mark, so adding more because nothing seems to be happening at 45 minutes is the most common way to take far more than planned.
  • Weigh what you take, and take less of a strain you have not tried before. Capsules and chewables with a stated amount per piece remove the guesswork.
  • Everyone responds differently. Body weight, an empty or full stomach, sleep, mood and the setting all change how an experience feels.
