The Best Magic Mushrooms for Beginners in Canada
Walking into the mushroom world for the first time can feel like reading a menu in a language you do not speak. Dozens of strain names, capsules, chocolates, gummies, tea bags, micro and macro. Which one is actually right for a first-timer? This guide breaks it down: the best formats and strains to start with, how much to take, what to expect, and what to leave for later.
The short version: choose something gentle and measurable, take a small amount, and set yourself up somewhere safe with someone you trust.
What makes a product beginner-friendly?
A good first product has three qualities:
- Predictability: a strain or product with a reputation for being balanced rather than overwhelming.
- Measurability: it is easy to know how much you are taking, either with a scale or a clear label.
- Small sizes: you can try it without committing to a big bag.
Remember that potency varies between strains and batches. Strain reputations are largely anecdotal, and research has found big differences even between mushrooms of the same strain grown side by side. That is why measuring and starting low matters more than the name on the bag.
Option 1: A classic dried strain
Golden Teacher is the go-to first strain for good reason. It has been around for decades, it is widely described as balanced and approachable, and we sell it from a single gram, so you do not need to buy a big bag. Our Golden Teacher strain guide has more.
Dried mushrooms are the most traditional way in, and they give you the most control, as long as you have a small digital scale that measures to 0.1 g or better. The trade-off is taste: dried caps are earthy and chewy, and some people find they upset the stomach.
How much: about 0.5 to 1 g for a first experience. That is a low dose, enough to feel a lift in mood, brighter colours and richer music while staying grounded.
Option 2: Measured capsules
If weighing dried caps sounds like a chore, capsules take the guesswork out. Every capsule in a bottle should contain the same amount, so it is easy to be consistent.
- Microdose capsules contain tiny amounts meant to be barely noticeable. They are for routines, not for a first trip.
- Macrodose capsules and other measured capsules contain larger amounts for a full experience. Check the label, and start with less than a full serving if the per-capsule amount is high.
Capsules typically kick in within 30 to 60 minutes, similar to or slightly slower than dried mushrooms. Our label reading guide explains what the numbers mean.
Option 3: Chocolate or gummies
Chocolate and gummies hide the earthy taste and come in portioned pieces, which makes them popular first picks. The catch is that they can take longer to kick in, often 30 to 90 minutes and sometimes more after a meal. That delay tempts people into taking a second piece too soon, which is the most common edible mistake.
How to start: one piece, then wait a full two hours before considering more. Better still, save more for another day. Our chocolate vs gummies guide compares them in detail.
Option 4: Tea
Tea is one of the gentlest formats. Many people find it easier on the stomach, and it tends to come on a little faster and smoother. Pre-measured Temple tea bags make it simple. See our tea how-to.
Option 5: A starter kit
Can't decide? A kit lets you explore without buying full sizes. The First Timer Kit bundles beginner-friendly picks, and the Microdose Starter Kit is built for routines. Try one item at a time, on separate days. Browse all starter kits.
Option 6: A microdose routine instead of a trip
Not everyone is looking for a full experience. If what interests you is a subtle, everyday routine rather than a trip, microdosing may be the better starting point. A microdose of about 0.05 to 0.25 g is meant to be barely noticeable, taken on a schedule with rest days in between. Our capsule routine and microdosing guide explain how it works, and what the research does and does not show.
What to leave for later
Some strains have heavyweight reputations and are best saved until you know how your body responds:
- Penis Envy and Albino Penis Envy, famous for strength
- Enigma, a rare, dense mutation with a strong reputation
- Large macrodose capsules or edibles with high per-piece amounts
There is no prize for going big on day one. The writer Michael Pollan, whose bestseller How to Change Your Mind helped bring psilocybin into mainstream conversation, has said in interviews that "People do have terrifying, excruciating experiences," and that support matters, especially at higher doses. Terence McKenna's famous five-gram "heroic dose" makes for great stories, but it is the opposite of a beginner's plan.
What a first low-dose experience feels like
At about 0.5 to 1 g of dried mushrooms on a light stomach, a typical arc is:
- 20 to 60 minutes: onset. Yawning, a fluttery stomach, a slight chill, feeling giggly or restless.
- 1 to 2 hours: a gentle peak. Colours brighten, music feels richer, textures may shimmer slightly, and laughter comes easily. You can still hold a conversation.
- 2 to 4 hours: a slow landing into a relaxed, reflective mood.
- About 4 to 5 hours: mostly back to normal, often with a pleasant afterglow.
Normal at this level: mild nausea, yawning, feeling warm or cold, emotional waves and moments of nerves on the come-up. These pass. Not normal: chest pain, trouble breathing, a seizure or someone who cannot be calmed. Call 911 for any of those.

Beginner questions we hear a lot
How do I measure dried mushrooms? Use a small digital scale that reads to at least 0.1 g, and ideally 0.01 g. Kitchen scales are not accurate enough for small amounts. Breaking up and mixing caps and stems from the bag gives a more even dose, since potency can vary between pieces.
Should I eat first? A light meal a few hours before is a good balance. A full stomach slows and dulls the onset, and an empty one can make nausea worse for some people.
What if I feel nothing? Wait. Effects can take an hour or more to appear, especially with edibles. If a dose still feels too light after two to three hours, try a bit more on another day rather than redosing.
Can I go out in public? For a first experience, staying home or in a private garden is much easier. Crowds, traffic and strangers can feel overwhelming, and it is easy to underestimate how altered you are.
Is it okay to mix with alcohol or cannabis? Skip both, at least for your first few experiences. Alcohol dulls and muddies things, and cannabis can intensify effects unpredictably, sometimes tipping a pleasant experience into an anxious one.
How often can I do this? Tolerance builds quickly and lasts several days, and big experiences take time to process. Many people leave weeks or months between full experiences. Our day after guide explains why.
Who should skip it
Do not take mushrooms if you are under 19, pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder. Avoid combining them with lithium, MAOIs or tramadol, and talk to a doctor if you take antidepressants or any other medication. Psilocybin is a controlled substance in Canada. Read our safety guide and medications guide first.
How strong is a gram, really?
It is tempting to think of a gram as a fixed unit of experience, but mushrooms do not work like that. A 2026 laboratory study that grew 14 cubensis strains under identical conditions found psilocybin content varied more than sevenfold between strains, and individual mushrooms of the same strain also differed noticeably. That is why the same 1 g can feel gentle from one bag and surprisingly strong from another. The practical lesson for beginners: treat every new bag, strain or product as unknown, and start at the low end every time you switch.
Our beginner picks at a glance
- Most classic: Golden Teacher, about 0.5 to 1 g
- No scale needed: measured capsules, starting below a full serving if the amount is high
- Tastiest: one piece of chocolate or one gummy, then wait two hours
- Gentlest on the stomach: mushroom tea
- Can't choose: the First Timer Kit
Start small, enjoy the ride, and take notes. You can always go a little further next time.
